The Archdiocese of Perth in conjunction with the Catholic Education Office are this year running an accredited catechist training course for Catechisis of Adults.
This course leverages off the catechist training for children run by Catholic Education. The theoretical components of images of God, Church and Jesus, moral theology, theory, Objectives and practice of RCIA Rites, Sacraments of the Church, tenets of Faith and Mystagogia and discipleship are all explored.
This year we have 2 classes running in parallel with 13 enrolled in the morning group and 13 enrolled for the evening.
This catechist training course was instituted following a conversation with the Auxiliary Bishop of Perth Rev Don Sproxton where he expressed concern about the level and standard of Catechist formation for Adults. The Perth Archdiocesan Committee explored the training for Childrens Catechist and found that their course was split into 2 sessions, the first session is theoretical and focussed on core theology of the Church and the second session was more focussed on practical aspects of instruction of Children.
The RCIA catechist course now shares the first session with the Childrens catechist where the theory is discussed but has its own workshops targeted at practical implementation of the theoretical area discussed and other specific RCIA topics.
The course is accredited and hence requires a practical assessment. This is done in two parts through the course and is a reinforcement of the practical application of the theoretical knowledge.
In addition to the course a weekend workshop will also be run to explore areas in greater depth.
